With its observance of the 150th anniversary of the
Civil War now past, the National Park Service is turning its attention to a
lesser-known period of American history: Reconstruction. The
agency is embarking on a yearlong study to inventory sites throughout the South
and beyond that are important to telling the sometimes-bloody story of a time
when 4 million freed blacks worked to build lives as a free people. • Article
