Sherman's arrival on Dec. 21, 1864 (Library of Congress) |
The Massie Heritage Center in Georgia is
commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with several events that
highlight what life was like for Savannahians that frigid winter when Union
troops arrived. On Dec. 9 and 11, Massie’s team of historical interpreters will
take guests on a walking tour of downtown sites. Dec. 13 they’ll entertain
Holiday Tour of Homes guests at the Massie building with a holiday tea
and a theatrical depiction of what life was like. On Dec. 17, Talley
Kirkland, an expert in Civil War history and a Fort McAllister State Park
ranger, will take guests back in time to December 1864 when Sherman and his
troops occupied Savannah and converted the Massie Common School building into a
hospital. • Article
